The Real Dangers of an Old Garage Door

It’s easy to underestimate the value of a good garage door. On top of adding curb appeal, they also provide security and utility, and can increase the value of your property. With these in mind, it may be time to service, upgrade, or replace your old garage door.

Springs

The springs used by a garage door operate under a lot of tension. Since garage doors can weigh more than 300 pounds (135 kg), if one of the springs breaks or is faulty, the door could prove dangerous for anyone standing near it. It may slam down quickly, injuring you or damaging your vehicle.

Wear and tear is an unfortunate fact of life, and it’s something you need to prepare for.

General wear and tear

As a door gets older, it gets looser and becomes easier to jimmy open. An old garage door should be replaced after ten to twelve years so as to prevent burglars from breaking in through your garage door. By keeping an eye on your door and its status, you can nip any possible problems in the bud. The best solution to many of the problems that arise from general wear and tear is simply replacing the door.

Lubricate your garage door frequently

Most metallic hardware systems are prone to rusting, so you’ll need to lubricate your door system with a good lubricant to keep your door running in good shape and condition. If you don’t take steps to protect your door system from rust, you could have to deal with water damage, loss of durability, and, of course, the risk of forced entry. Using a good lubricant, or even making your own, extends your doors life and preserves your garage. If rust has already set in, you may want to look into replacing the door.

Defects and outdated technology

If you have an older door opener, you may need to upgrade. New technology from Lift master openers can interfere with older systems built in 1993 or before. John Frazier of Central Valley Overhead Door in Fresno recommends changing your old unit. “Those units sometimes will develop a defect where the garage door will open if your neighbor purchased a brand new garage door opener that has My Q Technology with the remotes.” My Q Technology is known to affect garage door openers built in 1993 and before.
